Mulch & Soil Calculator
Cubic yards—
2 cu ft bags—
3 cu ft bags—
How the calculation works
Multiply length by width to get the area in square feet, then multiply by depth in feet (inches divided by 12) to get cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards, the unit landscape suppliers use for bulk deliveries. Bagged mulch and soil are usually sold in 2 or 3 cubic foot bags.
How deep should you go?
| Material | Recommended depth |
|---|---|
| Wood mulch around shrubs and perennials | 2–3 inches (keep it a few inches away from stems and trunks) |
| Compost top-dressing for vegetable beds | 1–3 inches |
| Lawn top-dressing | ¼–½ inch |
| New raised bed fill | Full bed height, usually 10–12 inches |
| Gravel path | 2–4 inches over landscape fabric |
Bags or bulk?
For anything over about 2 cubic yards, bulk delivery is usually cheaper per yard than bags, even with a delivery fee. Bags are easier for small jobs and tight spaces. Planning a new bed? See our guide to raised garden beds for the soil mix, or lawn care for top-dressing tips.
